Majorca – Pioneer of Package Holidays

Majorca is one of the most well established tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and has always been synonymous with cheap package tours. However, there are plenty of opportunities for private villa and apartment hire and there are plenty of smaller resorts away from the massed crowds of holidaymakers. Merger of Indian Airlines and Air India and Its Importance in Indian Aviation Market

Since independence Indian skies are ruled by two public run companies namely Air India and Indian Airlines. Other major carrier is Jet Airways which also provide low cost services like JetLite and Jet Konnect. Air India mainly caters to international passengers and Indian Airlines rule the domestic skies. The companies were started with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm, but with the opening of the Indian skies in the recent years have made the competition tougher for these companies.
In order to beat the competition and to keep the running costs low, a merger was announced by the Indian Government on 1st March, 2007. This merger saw a widespread discontentment from the staff of both airlines but soon all became a part of the new formed aviation company known as National Aviation Company Private Limited. This company was certified by the Chamber of Business and has its headquarters situated in Delhi.
Soon after founding the company, it was realised that instead of having a new identity that must be different from the existing ones, the company decided to go ahead with Maharaja as its mascot for its airlines with Air India as the name of the airlines. The only change that happened was the change in the logo which was removed and a new logo featuring a swan with Chakra at the bottom was decided.
The newly found entity is less under the control of government and its management is held by some of the best brains of Indian economy. The new company is more agile and flexible. The operating costs of the company have gone with a tremendous increase in their profits. The administrative costs have also gone down. It can be said that the maharaja is again on its track of regaining its past glory and fame.

Athens – seductive and charming

Seductive and charming, Athens is the birthplace of classical Greece and thus of the western civilization. She is now a bustling metropolis and crowded and chaotic, yet she does not let you forget that it is here that the Olympics were first born, and it is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

What to see:

There is so much to see in Athens, but fortunately most of it is located within a small area of the old city. The Acropolis is one of the world’s most recognizable monuments, and along with the Pantheon it rises above the city’s modern façade. The city’s historical central square has banned cars, and has been transformed into a beautiful pedestrian walkway. Most of the historical monuments are located around this area, and there are many cultural shows and concerts which are held here, amalgamating beautifully with the remnants of centuries of history. If you want to move beyond these monuments do visit the Zografou which has many quaint taverns and restaurants.

What to eat:

The residents of Athens love to eat late and party late and there are many nightclubs and restaurants which cater to their whimsical tastes. Most clubbers do not begin to go out until midnight, and dinner does not start before eight pm at the earliest. If you are looking for low-budget meal, try the souvlaki, consisting of grilled meat, vegetables (tomato and onion slices) and Greek ‘tzatziki’ which is mainly yogurt enriched with garlic and cucumber. These can be found at the roadside tavernas in abundance. The Athenians love to have their coffee and their drink, and the city is filled with cafes and restaurants on all the streets.

When to go:

Late autumn and spring are the best months to visit Athens. Summers are hot and dry, and during winter months there are occasional spells of rain.

Lisbon – Pretty and Unpretentious

Lisbon is one of the lesser known European capitals but it is among the prettiest and least pretentious of all them. Located around the hillside overlooking the Rio Tejo, she has all the cathedrals and museums which compromise any great capital, but she also has quaint streets and lovely backlanes which showcase the rich culture and ethos of Portugal. An amazing combination of the old and the new, the smaller streets are places where time has stood still, while the Praca Do Comercio is where Lisbon embraces the modern business infrastructure.

What to see:

Cristo Rei, the 100 metres tall Christ statue will remind you of Rio de Janeiro, and it offers you a spectacular view of the city. One of the best ways to see all the attractions of Lisbon is by taking one of the tourist trams around the streets. The leisurely pace will give you a good first hand glimpse of the old and new parts of Lisbon. There are many museums and galleries, the most popular among them being Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga. Most of Lisbon’s Metro can be termed as an art gallery, as many artists display their contemporary art here.

What to eat:

Fresh bread and the local wine at the small patio restaurants known as fadistas, listening to traditional Portuguese music is one of the favourite pastimes of Lisbon residents. Bairro Alto has some of the city’s best restaurants and nightclubs, and you can find revellers here till the wee hours of the morning. A bica coffee accompanied by a pastry is a great way to spend an evening while you watch the sun go down over the sea.

When to go:

Warm summers and mild winters make Lisbon a year round destination for tourists. The best time to visit ids of course is during the winters, since snow and frost are rare and even though there are occasional spells of rain, it is never too cold.

Helsinki – Comopolitan city with small town feel

Helsinki, the capital of Finland is a metropolis with a small town feel. It has a population of only 6,00,000 people and it retains the ambience of an intimate peaceful little town in a large country. The city is fairly young when you compare it to other European capitals, since it was founded in 1550 by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden. It is a dynamic sea- town and all the activity seems to be centred on its splendid harbour. Half of the city seems to water, and there are numerous little inlets and bays all around.

What to do:
Helsinki is a very cool city, without trying to be extraordinarily stylish. There is an innate sense of style here, and the décor is elegant and trendy. One of the favourite occupations of the residents of this lovely little city consists of taking a boat to one of the many restaurants located on the islands. One of Europe’s best water parks is the Serena Water Park at Espoo, which is a suburban city of Helsinki. Temppeliaukio is a beautiful underground church hewn from solid rock and is a popular arena for concerts.

What to eat:
Helsinki has the most cosmopolitan restaurants in Finland. Most of them serve a good lunch for a reasonable price, but at dinner time you may have to splurge a larger amount. The modest local eateries will serve you a simple grub of meat and potatoes and some other choices. The Finnish are the largest coffee consuming people, and there are numerous cafes catering to these legal coffee breaks. Their coffee is lighter in aroma and taste than what is popular worldwide. There are many places you can go to for a drink, and the main nightlife district is located within the centre of the city.

When to go:
Summer is the best time to visit Helsinki, since the winters can be very cold. Everyone seems to leave town or go into hibernation during the winters, but during the short summer months, there is a great deal of activity, and the streets are thronged with people cycling around town.
